To the lighthouse

An exquisite novel in which the times of action are mixed and intertwined, and the summer spent by the wealthy Ramsay family on the Isle of Skye turns out to be a kind of British "chronicle of lost time" - a fragile, almost idyllic time doomed to rapid destruction by the First World War. The children will grow up - some will survive and mature, some will lose their lives on the battlefield. Small failures and insults will be forgotten.
