This edition contains stories by N. V. Gogol that made up his collection Mirgorod: Old World Landowners, Taras Bulba, Viy, The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich. As the author himself pointed out, the collection Mirgorod (1835) became an organic continuation of Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka. "No, the time has passed: I will not see the Zaporozhian Cossacks anymore!" exclaimed one of the narrators back in Evenings... This idea now becomes the main one: the comparison of the legendary past and the present devoid of heroism is the basis of the composition of Mirgorod.
