This New Year's story has come to us from the east of the Canadian Labrador Peninsula, and it appeared among the Innu Indians living there. The supreme deity of the Indians, the Great Manitou, seeing how hard life was for the Innu, especially in winter, decided to brighten up their lives and give them a New Year's tree. The Great Manitou walked around the entire forest, addressing different trees, but they all refused his request. All except one, a modest fir tree, which has since decorated the Innu's home for the New Year. About the authors: Ovila Fontaine is a storyteller and popularizer of Innu Indian crafts. Charlotte Parent is an artist. Lives and works in Canada.
