Twelve chairs

While working on the novel, the authors crossed out sentences and places that repeated each other, trying to avoid banalities in the plot and in the behavior of the characters. Ostap Bender did not immediately become the main character of the novel, but gradually the strength of character and the scale of the personality convinced the authors that they really had the main character of their novel in front of them.
