Parisian Street Names: A Guide to Names, 2nd Edition

Abstract to the book "The Names of Parisian Streets. A Guide to the Names. 2nd Edition" by V. A. Milchin: "The Names of Parisian Streets" is a guide of a special kind. It tells about words - those words that are written in white on blue on the signs hanging on the walls of Parisian houses. The book tells the history of the names of Parisian streets, squares, bridges and embankments. Behind each name is either an episode in the history of France, or a picturesque detail of Parisian everyday life, or a forgotten layer of the French language, and most often all of these at once. If you translate these names, it turns out that in Paris there are streets of Cabbage Leaf and Kaplunovaya, Paromnaya and Stove, Cat-Fisherman and Beautiful View, and this view opened up from a hill that was formed from centuries-old garbage. The book will be interesting and useful not only for those who walk around real Paris, but also for those who read books about it, where street names are given not in translation, but in transcription.
