The story of one marriage

"We think we know the people we love." With these words, Pearly Cook begins a difficult story about the secrets of her marriage, set against the backdrop of post-war America in the 1950s. Pearly is a young housewife, the wife of a former soldier with a weak heart and the mother of a baby who soon after birth contracts polio. One day, a stranger appears on her doorstep and turns her life upside down. Pearly's seemingly strong marriage collapses before her eyes - she is unable to believe that she never fully knew her husband.
